Who We Are

The Association of Russian-speaking Theaters (ART) is a membership based organization that strengthens the artistic and cultural impact of theatre for Russian-speaking audiences by empowering, connecting, and inspiring our members.

Our Mission

The purpose of the Association of Russian Speaking Theatres is to help preserve the Russian language and culture in the United States, support the achievements of and communication between Russian-speaking people, and exchange creative ideas. ART unites theatres, organizations, and individuals throughout the world who make theatre in Russian for children, young people, and adults.

ART is dedicated to the artistic, cultural and educational rights of Russian speaking people across the globe and advocates on behalf of all regardless of nationality, cultural identity, ethnicity, or religion.

ART brings people together so that they can share knowledge and practices within the field of theatre in order to deepen understanding, develop practice, create new opportunities and strengthen the global sector, on behalf of everyone everywhere.

The roles that American Association of Russian speaking theaters (ART) in America plays for its members:

  • First of all, ART exists to build the field of theatre for Russian speaking audiences in America. It does this through linking members into regional networks and into the wider ART membership for international exchange. It provides through its programs and activities, which include publication, promotion, research, networking, artistic exchange, mentorship and development, opportunities for the field of theatre to become stronger and more effective.
  • Activator - ART is, at core, a network of members. To make real progress in the field of theatre for Russian speaking audiences, we need people to become active partners in this mission. By being active members of the network, members generate greater returns for their own work. By activating members in actions where they can have greater impact, ART contributes to a dynamic theatre landscape.
  • Synergizer -By trying to see the big picture and by embracing all those working in the field, ART attempts to find ways to correlate action and cooperation between two or more members, so that the whole becomes bigger than simply a sum of the parts. Sometimes a small shift of focus, or simply a connection between previously unrelated people or organizations working in the field, can create a startling change or development.

Association of Russian Speaking Theatres is supported in part by funding from the Montgomery County Government and the Arts & Humanities Council of Montgomery County.
